Google Business Profile categories for plumbers & HVAC
Your primary category is one of the most important choices on your profile. Here's how to choose it the way Google says to.
Google's rules in plain English
- Use as few categories as possible to describe your core business.
- Pick categories that complete the sentence "This business IS a ___", not "this business HAS a ___".
- Choose the most specific category that's still representative — Google adds general categories behind the scenes.
- Don't use categories as keywords or to describe attributes.

Plumbers: categories to look for
Type these into the category box in your profile and pick only what's true. (Available category names can change; use what Google's picker shows.)
- Plumber — the usual primary for general residential/commercial plumbing.
- Drainage service — if drain/sewer work is a distinct core part of your business.
- Septic system service — only if you actually service septic systems (common in rural parts of the Valley).
- Water heater installation / repair type categories — only if that's a real core line, otherwise list it as a service.
HVAC: categories to look for
- HVAC contractor — common primary for full heating + cooling companies.
- Air conditioning contractor / Air conditioning repair service — if AC is your main work (very common in Central Valley summers).
- Heating contractor / Furnace repair service — if heating is a core line.
- Air duct cleaning service — only if you truly offer it as a core business.
Categories vs. services
Categories say what you are. The Services list says what you do. "Tankless water heater install", "slab leak repair", "mini-split install", "AC tune-up" are services — add them there with a short description. That's where most of your detail belongs. See Google: Edit your Business Profile.
A quick decision process
- Write down the 3 jobs that bring in most of your revenue.
- Pick the single category that best describes a business doing those jobs → primary.
- Add a secondary category only if a customer would describe you that way too.
- Put everything else in Services.
- Review after a season; change only with a reason.

FAQ
How many categories should I choose?
Google says to use as few categories as possible to describe your overall core business. One accurate primary category plus a few truly relevant secondary ones is typical.
Should a plumber add 'Water heater' or 'Drain' categories?
Only if they describe what your business IS, not just a service it offers. Services belong in the Services section.
Can I add categories just to show up for more searches?
No. Google's guidelines say not to use categories solely as keywords or to describe attributes.
Is 'HVAC contractor' or 'Air conditioning contractor' better as primary?
Choose the one that best matches your main line of work and how customers know you. If most of your jobs are AC install/repair, the AC-specific category may be more representative; if you do full heating and cooling, a general HVAC category often fits.
